Production of the new ‘cradle frame’ SS80 began in 1924, it was at that time the flagship model, ‘SS’ for Super Sports – 80 for a guaranteed 80 Mph ! Registered 25th March 1924 XR 6778 is one of the first produced, frame no. 9, as such is one of the oldest surviving. The works record card shows that it was delivered to London dealers Franklin Bros, fitted with a Swallow sidecar, the original owner unfortunately not recorded however from 1939 to the present day the ownership history is well documented with nine subsequent owners. Still retaining its original JAP engine, and fitted with Webb front forks as were fitted to Broughs from 1925. This work probably being done at the factory as many of SS80’s received this upgrade to improve the handling, it also received an Enfield rear brake upgrade and modification to the final drive system. The bike retains a correct type Sturmey-Archer 3 speed gearbox.
Having resided in a private collection of a Brough Club member for the last few years the bike had seen outings in club events and rallies, work prior to this use included a rebuild of the gearbox, new oil pipes, and a new rear brake drum as well as both wheels being repainted and rebuilt with new spokes. It remains in good overall condition, in preserved rather than restored cosmetic condition, however it is corrosion free and mechanically excellent. The engine is in fine running order and the bike is a delight to ride. A significant and early example it is 1 of only 102 examples known to have survived complete.
