Built for only one year between 1964 and 1965 the BSA Lightning Clubman was a factory produced homologation special designed for racing. It was BSA’s attempt to equal the success of the Triumph Thruxton Bonneville, which they did on August 14th 1965 when the great Mike Hailwood beat Phil Read and Percy Tait who were both riding Bonneville’s at the Hutchinson 100, a 15 lap production race at Silverstone circuit during atrocious wet weather conditions.
Fitted with a close ratio gearbox, lower handlebars, rear sets and a racing seat, the engines were all bench tested and were capable of 120 Mph.
Fewer than 200 examples were built making them also very rare, so genuine examples don’t come up that often. This fine matching number example was fully restored in 2012 and has resided in a private collection ever since. It remains in truly excellent condition and great running order supplied with a BSA dating certificate authenticating it as genuine and matching number.
