Based on the Speed Twin the 500cc TR5 was Triumphs first real attempt at a credible ‘off road’ bike that could also be used on public roads. The name ‘Trophy’ came from the three ‘specials’ that Triumph built for the Italian International Six Day Trial in 1948, which went on to win three gold medals and the manufacturers team trophy.
Racing success came in the USA, running in Class ‘C’ of the AMA these bikes became the bike of choice for amateur and professional riders.
This example from 1959 looks to have been imported from the USA in 2002 and restored soon after. Coming from a deceased estate we don’t have much paperwork but on inspection the bike remains in very good condition and in fine running order. Fitted with electronic ignition ( 6v ) it has just had a service and a new battery fitted. It is not a matching number bike, but it is a well presented, well restored example that is ready to be used and enjoyed, supplied with a few old MoT’s and the current UK V5C.
